For Horned Frog linebacker Marcel Brooks, senior year will be a homecoming of sorts.

Brooks was a five star recruit from Flower Mound’s Marcus High, but his collegiate career hasn’t gone to plan. He played his freshman year at LSU, before transferring. At TCU he was shifted to wide receiver.

“Honestly when I was here the first two years, I don’t think they knew where to put me and it was very hard to find a home and a position,” said Brooks.

But with Sonny Dykes leading the team, Brooks is back at linebacker.

“I like to talk about the new staff and the opportunities they’ve given me because they’ve been a blessing,” he said.

The return to his old position, new coaching staff and goals for this upcoming season are all things that Brooks spoke about following Tuesday morning’s football practice

When talking about the new coaching staff, Brooks specifically highlights his relationship with defensive coordinator and linebacker coach Joe Gillespie. Gillespie came from Tulsa University where he was named FootballScoop Linebackers Coach of the Year and a finalist for Defensive Coordinator of the Year as well.

“We match each other like spiritual animals on the field, being able to attack things on the field and bringing that edgy energy to practice,” Brooks said.

Brooks deems himself as the energy guy on the field and has high hopes for his team going into the fall.

“My goal is to win a national championship with this team that we have […] we still have to work really hard to get to where we need to be, we have a gap and every day we’re closing in on it, step by step,” Brooks said.

The Horned Frogs are set to hit the field for the first time under coach Sonny Dykes on April 22 at 7 p.m. for their spring game.
